The retro-fit Horizontal SolaPlug enables a solar thermal collector to be connected to an existing hot water cylinder whilst keeping an immersion heater, significantly reducing the cost of a solar installation. The heat exchanger is sufficiently effective to almost match the performance of a solar coil. For an installation using the SolaPlug retaining the existing cylinder, the sizing design must start with the cylinder.
When fitted to indirect cylinders the installation is unlikely to have dedicated solar volume, but with the correct backup heating timing the performance will be very close to a new twin coil cylinder.
