PV with Battery Storage
PV with Battery system? - How to upgrade to battery storage!
So you've got your PV system its working well, infact its working so well that it's generating more power than you actually need. Using a battery with PV system could help you solve the age old problem associated with solar power – when you need the most energy the sun isn't shining!
Of course using a battery with PV system won't store enough energy to keep you going through the winter months, but it can store your surplus daytime energy to provide electrical power at night. These systems are not intended to get you off grid and give you energy independence but they will help you use all your self-generated solar electricity for the maximum benefit, especially as most people are paid an export tariff whether they export any electricty to the grid or not!
A battery with PV system can be easily retrofitted. The battery charger unit can be fitted between the solar array and the inverter, but the batteries themselves are heavy and need locating carefully. The only practical option for battery location is a garage or out building. Obviously if the batteries are remote from the inverter you need to avoid losses in the cables between the two.
