As part of any off-grid system safety measures have to be integrated, and for the DC supply these are a battery disconnect and battery fuse.

In order to perform any maintenance and for protection from electrical fires you need to be able to isolate the DC supply. By installing a battery disconnect (DC rated circuit breaker) between the batteries and inverter charger you can disconnect the DC current conveniently and safely.

A battery fuse, placed as close to the battery bank as possible, is a required protection and careful consideration of the sizing is important. The fuse must be large enough to carry the maximum current whilst not being over-sized for the wiring current rating. A recommended rating of 10% to 20% greater than the maximum current prevents annoying fuse blowing, and you also need to account for the efficiency of the inverter.
